Spend a night on Hatoma, a remote Okinawan island with only 65 residents. This 2-day, 1-night experience includes a guided walking tour to learn about the island’s history and culture, a beachside BBQ dinner with local ingredients, and a magical night under the stars with live Okinawan folk music performed by a local sanshin master. During the tour, you’ll collect driftwood to use for that evening’s bonfire. Optional snorkeling is available for those who wish. Discover the slow rhythm of island life while enjoying nature, food, and music in one of Japan’s hidden paradises.
Escape the crowds and experience the authentic island life of Hatoma Island, a small and remote island in Okinawa’s Yaeyama archipelago.
This overnight tour begins at Ishigaki Port and takes you by ferry to Hatoma Island, where time seems to slow down. Upon arrival, enjoy a guided walking tour led by a local guide, who will share stories about the island’s culture, history, and daily life. During the tour, you will also collect driftwood that will later be used for a traditional island bonfire.
After checking in at your accommodation, the afternoon is free for you to explore the island, relax by the beach, or join optional snorkeling activities (available for an additional fee, registration on site).
In the evening, savor a BBQ dinner made with locally sourced ingredients in an outdoor setting. As night falls, gather around a warm bonfire built with the driftwood you collected earlier and enjoy a live sanshin performance by local musician Isamu Kaji. The gentle sound of the Okinawan instrument, combined with the star-filled sky and ocean breeze, creates an unforgettable island experience.
On the second day, return to Ishigaki Island by ferry, taking with you memories of Hatoma’s natural beauty, music, and slow island rhythm.
